My name is Goh Mei Xing, and I am a student nurse. I was born into a family of three and grew up in a Buddhist family, as both of my late parents were Buddhists. Today, I would like to share my testimony of how I came to know Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. Through difficult seasons in my life and the lives of my loved ones, God showed His love and faithfulness to me through the care and support of many brothers and sisters in Christ. Their kindness opened my heart to seek God and discover His grace.
Before knowing Christ personally, my understanding of God was shaped by the Buddhist beliefs I grew up with. I tried my best to rely on my own strength to handle the challenges in life. However, life became especially difficult when my late mother suffered from Stage 4 colon cancer and its relapse, had an accidental fall, mild dementia on top of chronic illnesses, e.g. hypertension, hyperlipidemia, experienced several hospitalizations, and underwent surgery. Around the same period, I was also struggling with my own health condition — a slipped disc with severe sciatica pain radiating to my left leg, which required hospitalization and surgery while I was struggling to complete my final nursing internship.
These circumstances made me feel overwhelmed, anxious, and uncertain about the future. I tried to stay strong, but deep down I realized how limited my own strength was. I began to sense that I needed something greater than myself to hold on to during these difficult times.
My journey toward knowing Christ began when I met Sharon through our freelance work. She kindly invited me to attend the Alpha Course at Woodlands Evangelical Free Church since coincidentally we're staying nearby, so that I could explore and learn more about Christianity. Through Alpha, I encountered a welcoming community and began to understand the message of the Gospel more clearly.
One person who had a great impact on my learning was Dr. Ng Kok Yee, who served as an Alpha Course facilitator. She was extremely knowledgeable, approachable, and patient in answering many questions about the Christian faith. Through her guidance and the fellowship of the Alpha cell group, I began to understand who Jesus is and what He has done for us.
During this time, I also experienced tremendous love, care, and practical support from many brothers and sisters in Christ, including Pastor Edward, Dr. Ng Kok Yee, Sharon, Fortuna, Suan Choo, Jessie, and others. They showed compassion toward my late mother and me during our difficult health journeys. Their kindness reflected the love of Christ in a very real way.
Through these experiences, I began to see that Christianity was not just a religion but a relationship with a loving God.
As I continued learning about the Gospel, I came to realize that I could not rely entirely on my own strength to navigate life. I needed God’s grace, guidance, and salvation. The Bible reminds us in Proverbs 3:5–6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."
I began to understand that Jesus died for my sins and offers forgiveness and eternal life to those who believe in Him. This truth deeply touched my heart.
At that moment, I chose to take a step of faith. I said the Sinner’s Prayer, acknowledging my sins and inviting Jesus Christ into my life as my Lord and Savior. I surrendered my worries and burdens to God, trusting that He would guide my life according to His will.
Since receiving Christ into my life, I have experienced a deeper sense of peace, hope, and purpose, even in the midst of life’s challenges. Although difficult situations still arise, I no longer feel that I have to face them alone. I know that God walks with me through every season of life.
The Bible says in Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
This promise has become very meaningful to me. During times of stress from studies, work, or personal struggles, I learn to bring my concerns to God in prayer and trust Him with the outcome.
Being part of the church community has also strengthened my faith. The encouragement and fellowship of brothers and sisters in Christ continue to remind me of God’s love and faithfulness. As a student nurse, I also feel inspired to serve others with compassion and care, reflecting the love of Christ in my work and interactions with patients.
Baptism is an important step of faith and obedience in my journey as a Christian. It is a public declaration that I believe in Jesus Christ and have chosen to follow Him. Through baptism, I want to testify that my life now belongs to Him.
As written in 2 Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here.”
Baptism symbolizes my new life in Christ and my commitment to grow in faith and walk with Him.
I am deeply grateful to God for guiding me to know Him and for placing many caring brothers and sisters in Christ along my journey. I would like to thank Pastor Edward, Dr. Ng Kok Yee, Sharon, Fortuna, Suan Choo, Jessie and the church community for their love, prayers, and support during difficult times.
A Bible verse that encourages me greatly is Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”
Today, I give thanks to God for His grace and look forward to continuing my walk with Him.
